why i no longer burn brushpiles in the middle of the winter

  2. doesnt it. In the winter the brushpile becomes a critter condo, and all the little guys find warm sheltered places to hibernate--or in some cases, not hibernate--and all those tracks lead directly to a group of apple trees (if you crane your neck you can see them off-picture, to the lower right behind me)where they root around for seeds and such.
    You should see the other side!

    By spring they've at least got a chance to get out before the pile gets burnt and I sleep better for that.
